What no one would have expected or hoped is that Ferrari would be the protagonist of two negative events : bang and trouble in the pits cost a very high price in this Grand Prix of Austria. Where almost it fades into the background yet another Mercedes one-two, with Rosberg in front from the first lap despite a Hamilton super load, which just yesterday had celebrated reaching a height of forty Vettel pole. The duo of silver, although they show that the best team is the same, it has diversified a bit ‘Watch with a Hamilton not able to drive like a champion: he became “cheat” once in Turn 1, then his little attack incisive in curve 3 to a rather convincing Rosberg was well buffered. After that, nothing to report until the end.
AN UNEXPECTED GIFT – As often happened in this era of Stuttgart’s domain, the race itself was seen from the third onwards. The now single step of the podium realistically coveted by “other” now seemed almost mortgaged with relative comfort from Vettel, but a nut who did not want to screw the first try in the only tire change, just after the halfway stage, has delayed ten seconds back, without compromising appeal the final outcome. Vettel will only come fourth, with the greatest regret of being separated only by less than a handful of tenths behind Felipe Massa. Really a great gift to the Brazilian, but it is true that Massa did his part well: already well qualified and better than his fellow Bottas, in the race you could fly out better out of the corners and above all he was able to not lose step and concentration for all the latest thirty laps winding down until the final round number 71. A maturity that many would like to see when, unfortunately, instead Massa lost the final races and podiums in his parable red.
A CRASH THAT AFFECT THE FUTURE? – The error in the Ferrari box, by chance or nervousness, thus has a direct relationship with the second missed the podium in the season for the red car. Two weeks ago it was Raikkonen to have done so to escape a problem already seen, he slipped in a curve that had cost him precious time. Today another “skating” was still the enemy of his race, with spectacular and highly dangerous. On the first lap, starting virtually from the bottom, Raikkonen had already reassembled several positions, but in a fast corner, under full acceleration, the car hires a double pendulum uncontrolled and involves a sopraggiungente Alonso. The two cars go off on a tangent and touch on in a moment the left wall, very close view of the need of not great escape routes at that point, with the nose in the Ferrari that McLaren, without contacts among suspensions or other protrusions to Ferrari driver’s helmet. A sandwich at high speed stunning to see and luckily ended with no physical consequences. But a freak accident, with mysterious aspects have not yet been well documented that do not allow apportioning blame certain but that certainly does not do anyone any good. Alonso was once more confident because he had finally seen improvements in the McLaren, but he knew it would be a race of transition, with no possibility of a result because of big penalty incurred for the fifth unit mounted propulsive year. A rule exaggerated the extent, that discourages and humiliates teams and drivers, with which soon sort it out some other top teams.
The difference is that Alonso with Raikkonen had full justification on low expectations of this race, while the Finn was observed more and more special for the lack of desired performance and increasingly advocated by the leaders of the team. Another yellow card, in short, that will weigh heavily on the fate of what is the oldest driver in the circus.
WELL POSSIBLE HEIRS TO SECOND SEAT IN RED – The final order, with Fourteen riders arrival of which only six in full swing, certainly encourages speculation about a possible rotation of team mate Vettel that many advocate for a long time. The two-time Finnish champion, in addition to having lost even in direct comparison tests, and it was wrong heavily strategy in Q1, today would have a hard time to move up the ranks. Vettel fourth, found himself behind a constant Bottas, impeccable and capable of overcoming Hulkemberg, hitting the minimum objective and more realistic of the day. Maldonado seventh was a big surprise and gave adrenaline in his own way with a couple of high-risk maneuvers, the last of which made it possible to send off the track and overtake the young Verstappen, perhaps not able to handle the situation but, As far as possible, also prudent for self-preservation and the strong desire to bring the team useful points. The Dutch baby was still worthwhile to have put behind Perez, ninth, and Ricciardo, tenth. Better than other times but, honestly, three points from the first drive of the official Red Bull team compared to newcomer (even adolescent) are certainly a bit bitter in the home race of Mateschitz. And to think that without the withdrawal of Sainz, long around the ninth, risked being both Toro Rosso to zero points against RBR, while valid while Kvyat, twelfth, today has never seen a real chance of reaching at least the tenth .
